In Winter

The ground loop circulates the water that absorbs the heat from the earth, returning it to the indoor heat pump. The heat pump then extracts the heat from the water and distributes it through your home as warm air. Then, the water is re-circulated so that it can collect more heat from the ground. The loop water is much warmer when it comes inside the home than when it returns to the earth because we’re removing heat.

In Summer

The indoor heat pump takes the hot air from inside your home and removes the heat. It leaves behind cool air that can now be distributed through the vents as air conditioning. The removed heat is then pushed back into the earth through the ground loop. The water is warmer leaving the home than when it returns, because we’re pushing the heat towards the ground loop, and not retaining it.
